SchoolChoice opens Jan. 15, and we’re holding Facebook Live events on the DPS Facebook page to help answer your questions! The hour-long events, hosted by Enrollment staff members, will feature an overview of the process, then a question-and-answer period. The events will be broken down by grade. Below are the schedule and the recordings of past sessions.
SchoolChoice window opens Jan. 15
The SchoolChoice window for the 2020-21 school year is 8 a.m. Jan. 15 to 4 p.m. Feb. 16. DPS’ annual enrollment process is for students who want or need to attend a new school next year (preschool students must apply each year; enrollment is not guaranteed).
You can start researching your school options now using School Finder, the Enrollment Guide or by contacting schools directly. Then, rank your schools in order of preference (up to 12) and submit your SchoolChoice application by the Feb. 16 deadline.
To get ready, create an account or sign in using your Parent Portal username and password here. Then, you can access the application beginning 8 a.m. Jan. 15. There is no advantage to submitting early; simply submit your application anytime between 8 a.m. Jan. 15 and 4 p.m. Feb. 16.
Note: Incoming preschool students must participate in SchoolChoice on a yearly basis; due to space limitations, enrollment in a preschool program is not guaranteed. If your student is currently in kindergarten through 11th grade and will be staying at his or her current school for 2021-22, you do not have to fill out a SchoolChoice application.
What happens after you submit your application?
When the SchoolChoice window closes, we use a computer algorithm to match students to schools based on the preferences listed on their applications, as well as school admission priorities and available space. Families will be notified of their results in late March. The system is designed to maximize the number of students getting their most-preferred schools; last year, 84% of students were placed in their first-choice school.
