Get ready for the 2027–28 school year! Round 1 of SchoolChoice opens Dec. 1, 2026, at 10 a.m. and closes Jan. 19, 2027, at 4 p.m.

Navigating the school enrollment process for your children can sometimes feel overwhelming. To help make the process easier, Denver Public Schools is launching a new video series! We are pairing up with local DPS families to break down every phase of SchoolChoice step-by-step, delivering key information right when you need it most.

To kick off the series, we’re sharing a big-picture overview of SchoolChoice Round 1.

What is SchoolChoice?

At DPS, we believe every single student deserves to attend a school where they can grow and thrive. SchoolChoice is our open enrollment process that empowers families to apply to any DPS school for the upcoming academic year. Whether you are interested in a neighborhood school right down the street or a specialized program anywhere in the city, SchoolChoice provides choices tailored to your child's needs.

Who Should Participate in Round 1?

Families should participate in Round 1 if:

  • Your child is entering a transition grade (preschool, kindergarten, sixth grade or ninth grade).

  • You are brand new to Denver.

  • You want to explore a different school for your student for the 2027-28 year.

  • You reside in a neighboring school district outside of Denver (out-of-district families are always welcome to apply!).

Note: If your child plans to stay at their current school and is not entering a transition grade next year, you do not need to submit the SchoolChoice application. Instead, simply log in to your SchoolChoice account and indicate that you would like your student to attend that school.

Important Dates

Mark your calendars! The Round 1 application opens at 10 a.m. on Dec. 1, 2026 and closes at 4 p.m. on Jan. 19, 2027.

There is no preference given to early applications — all submissions received during the Round 1 window are entered into the lottery equally, regardless of whether they are submitted on day one or the final day. Placement results will be released in late February. DPS strongly encourages all participating families to apply during Round 1, as this window offers the best opportunity for acceptance into a most-preferred school.

What Should Families Do Right Now?

Right now in October, the best step you can take is to explore your options:

  • Visit the DPS School Finder and individual school websites.

  • Attend open houses and take school tours.

  • Connect and talk with other DPS families.
